A man with no name and no past leaves the madhouse where people are supposedly cared for and enters a world where people are supposedly free. Alone on a night train to the sea he dreams of seeing, he steps off in an open field and lands in an illegal coal mine, where scientists with academic titles dig to make ends meet beside the people of a whole underground town. There he meets Kolimechkov, his companion, disciple and betrayer, and when a blast shakes the earth the two stumble on a lavish Roma wedding in the abandoned galleries. His road leads on to an ageing village whose librarian lends books to the dead to keep up the illusion of a library, and to a site where an American woman and a fake priest are building a church. Is he a new Jesus, or just a runaway lunatic?
