The author, a physician, calls these pieces 'quick stories': strange, sometimes true, sometimes obviously invented. They give voice to odd characters, among them a prompter who speaks almost inaudibly, a doctor turned tiler, a chess player transformed at the board, an investor paid to skip annual meetings and a tailor who can see through clothes.
