In 1944 a thirteen-year-old Jewish girl is deported with her family. Barefoot and happy with little as a child, she walks in wooden clogs through Auschwitz and the camps of Germany and survives with the help of her elder sister Judit. Then a new odyssey begins: how to live, where, with whom? Behind her are burned lives, her parents' among them; ahead lies rubble, both real and emotional. Estranged even from relatives who never knew the camps, she tries to make a new life in Israel, then leaves again, touring Europe, and as an old woman she looks back on it all.
