In October 1932 the newspaper Murska krajina announced that Miss Rozika Hahn and Mr Franjo Schwarz, a merchant from Čakovec, had married in the synagogue at Murska Sobota. Not wanting to take over his father's shop, Franjo soon after the birth of their son Evgen rents a shop by the railway station in Šalovci in the Goričko hills, where he means to make his way as a wholesaler. Arriving knowing no one, the couple build many ties with neighbours and business partners. Their story is told in retrospect by their maid Žalna, who lived with them; objects and above all photographs stir her memories, and the narrative moves out of order in three long chapters. The small family lives happily, though dark forebodings hang in the air, in a novel about the fate of the Jewish community in Prekmurje.
