At the end of the Second World War the Red Army has reached the forgotten borderland between the Mura and Raba rivers, and it is only a matter of hours before Murska Sobota is liberated. In the once-elegant Hotel Dobray, with a casino and a brothel upstairs, Hungarian soldiers have dug in and a last game of billiards is still being played as many fates collide in one night. Through the town wander restless souls, among them Franz Schwartz, a Jewish merchant who is one of the few deported Jews to come back from Auschwitz. The novel also returns to the day the town's Jews were taken away, the day his son was to give his first violin concert in front of the hotel.
