Shaul Robinson is thirty-three, a critic and author of a few experimental books who mostly lives by stealing small bits of other people's writing. In June 1995, during Hebrew Book Week, he meets Nahman Lori, a poet he has known since childhood, at a hummus place in Jerusalem, and leaves agreeing to break into a library. Around this caper the novel draws in their families: Shaul's father Malkiel, a patient in an army psychiatric hospital, and his mother Varda, who looks after a replica of a family grave in Australia; Nahman's father the poet Shraga Levin, in Jerusalem, and his mother Leah, a Tel Aviv lawyer. As the strands knot together, evidence builds that two killers are at large under Tel Aviv's streets, and maybe more. The characters work restlessly on and against each other in a world of cut-off calls, spite, silence and shredded paper.
