Twenty years after civil war broke out in Croatia, four friends gather in Vienna for a wedding organised by another exile. One of them, Ranko Musulin, begins a hypnotic story about hunting a great boar while the first bullets were fired in Slavonia. Sacked from his job in Zagreb and forced, as a member of the other nation, to withdraw to Mount Papuk to survive, Musulin crashes his car at the edge of the forest. He is rescued by Little Mitar, an old village eccentric who has not yet heard that Tito is dead, and Goran, a young army deserter, and once recovered he sets out with them after the divine Giant, the boar whose tracks they found beside his overturned car.
