In the house on Via Gemito in Naples, smelling of paint and turpentine, the canvases have to be taken off the beds before anyone can sleep. Federico, called Federì, works as a railway clerk to feed his family, but is sure he is destined to be a great painter, and the longer that destiny is delayed the more furiously he rages at his job, at Naples and above all at his wife Rusinè, scapegoat for all his frustrations. Decades later his eldest son, who was always ashamed of his father's lies, tells the story of this overbearing man, unsure now how far his own memories can be trusted.
