In 1906 Giorgis Bakas, a boatman in Ottoman-ruled Ioannina, is sworn in as a liberator by the Epirus Society, with the mission of carrying weapons to prepare the countryside for liberation. At dawn on 28 October 1940 his son Andreas, a teacher in an Epirus village, loads his Mannlicher and waits for the Italians while his comrades, as planned, leave the border, his task being to cover their retreat. In 1947 Andreas's eldest son loads his own rifle, while his mother is forced to turn to foreign arms. Each is called on to free his land, defend his home, and honour or betray his oaths. Inspired by true stories and dozens of written testimonies.
