During the Second World War, orphans grow up on the estate of the beautiful Miss Monika, whose tender care keeps them alive; among them is her favourite, Vit, and the children come of age both sexually and politically. In the 1950s Monika and the girl Vit loves are sent as 'fascist debauchees' to a women's labour camp near the town of B., a place of extreme physical and mental abuse, where Vit, now the camp doctor, uses startling methods to heal their wounds and souls. By the early 1960s, the years of the thaw, the survivors must try to free themselves from a camp that has moved into their minds.
