Sintren

Saraswati is twelve, an innocent village girl who does well at school and is set on going on to junior high, though her hard-working family can barely get by. Her mother presses her into a match with Kirman, the handsome son of the man she works for; Saraswati gives in, but the engagement falls apart when Kirman's family is threatened by a woman named Wastini. When Larasati, a friend of her mother's, offers her work as a sintren dancer, Saraswati accepts, and the role lifts her family's fortunes while bringing troubles of its own. Around her the novel draws poverty, love, belief, revenge and rivalry, and the place of women in the village.
