Moina grows up in Jahakhat, an Assamese village of the Kaibarta caste, in the years after independence. Shamed as low-born by his classmate Nareswar, he nurses a wish for revenge; when the grandfather who backed his schooling dies, his education ends, and friends teach him to smoke, steal and join the dacoit Prem. In three parts the novel follows him from boyhood into crime, through failed attempts to escape it, to prison, while his cousin Gopal turns to the communists and the village is changed by the Mahapurushia faith and socialist politics. Around this runs a portrait of rural Assam, its myths and folk tales, envy and love, and its landscape.
