A fever has wiped out nearly everyone. Nico Storm, aged thirteen, travels with his father Willem through an almost empty South Africa, where looted shops hold ever fewer tins, radiation leaks from Koeberg and packs of killer dogs, and of men, roam free. Willem means to build a society again, and at the old Vanderkloof dam, renamed Amanzi, a handful of drifters joins them to begin anew. It does not take long for humanity’s old failings to return: the settlement splits over faith and politics, while gangs on motorbikes, heavily armed, raid and kill across the country and become harder to hold off. Then the cold, unreadable Domingo rides in alone and quickly takes charge of the settlement’s defence, though no one can be sure of his loyalty. Nico tells it all years later, as a grown man.
