Berlin, spring 1940. On Joseph Goebbels's orders, a big band is founded for the foreign radio service Germany Calling and becomes famous as Mr. Goebbels Jazz Band. Europe's best musicians, among them foreigners, Jews and homosexuals, play for their lives in the service of Nazi propaganda, with jazz of all things, condemned as degenerate. Up to six million British households tune in every day to swing with anti-Allied lyrics and the star presenter William Joyce, alias Lord Haw-Haw, who wants the band's success recorded in a novel. The Swiss writer Fritz Mahler, chosen for the task, ends up in Berlin's jazz cellars, drinking too much Cointreau.
