Pavel Roglev, sixteen, has lived in Germany almost all his life. A talented violinist, top student and athlete, he is about to become a full German, adopted by his mother's second husband, the engineer Heinrich Weber, once his biological father signs away his parental rights. Pavel has no memory of the man and thinks of him as a sixth finger, a useless extra to be removed quickly and cleanly. He and Heinrich drive a rented BMW to a small Bulgarian provincial town to meet someone who lives in a reality of his own on the edge of survival, for what should be a formality. But the plan goes astray. Among the relatives he meets, whose lives carry the stories of the years after communism, and in the clash of German order with Balkan feeling, Pavel encounters dignity and humiliation, scorn and sympathy, love and death.
