Legend says the nails of Christ's crucifixion vanished after the Resurrection: one went into a crown, one onto a spear, and one was melted into a sword, and whoever holds all three will rule the world. The third relic lies in the Balkans, in the city where Constantine the Great was born. In 1939 Himmler gave Hitler a map of six routes for research into an Aryan past, one pointing to Serbia. Five years later, in Niš, SS officer Heinrich Kahn finds the site: the sword lies beneath ancient Naissus, in a collection known as Constantine's Crossing. Two men block his way, the enigmatic Chetnik major Nemanja Lukić and the city's commander, the Bavarian nobleman Otto von Fenn, while Allied bombs fall and a series of gruesome murders makes soldiers whisper the word vampire.
