During the Great War the psychiatric hospital at Guberevac in Belgrade was the only autonomous ground in Serbia that the enemy did not occupy. The novel turns it into a republic of free people, doctors and patients as equals, with its own parliament and government. Around it move the hospital's director, Dr Dušan Stojimirović, friends of Serbia such as the American officer Edward Ryan and Sir Thomas Lipton, a taxidermist, Vasilije Arnot, charged since the days of the Obrenović kings with a diorama of the country's animals, and Teofilović, a New York architect obsessed with the underground. Madness here is an island of reason amid the insanity of war, and the book mocks the myths of national history.
