In a future just one generation away, a city called New Berlin has risen on the ruins of war-torn Aleppo, an attempt at a post-hipster utopia for a new society. From there the narrator tells the story of a monstrous social experiment. It begins in our present, when the Danish marketer Robert Holm attends a conference in China, makes a horrifying discovery in a shopping mall and has something like a revelation. With the help of social networks he launches a new migration of peoples: divided societies really divide, walls grow between people, the environment improves, and New Berlin prospers in the Syrian semi-desert, all for the good of the planet and its inhabitants.
