In Monterrey on the eve of the Cold War, Olegaroy, a plain, sleepless reader of newspapers who believes himself a great thinker, takes the mattress of a woman stabbed to death in the hope that it will let him sleep. The theft brings him endless trouble, the misfortunes of a murderer who has killed no one, and he sets out to look into the crime himself. Visiting wakes with his attentive mother, he gathers a philosophy of death and begins an encyclopedia of human misfortune, while a following gathers around his parables: Salomé, a chorus girl; Professor Mariles, poet and mathematician; and Fabián, a troubled priest who carries his master's ideas all the way to the Vatican. A narrator sure of his hero's genius tells it all as the true life of a forgotten Mexican sage.
