Asaf, sixteen, shy and clumsy, is pulled out of his routine and handed a hopeless errand: find out whose large, unruly dog has been picked up roaming Jerusalem. The dog sets the pace, leading him through the city to people and places from which, piece by piece, he assembles the story of Tamar, a solitary, stormy girl entangled in a perilous underworld who resists it bravely. Tamar has a bold, almost crazy plan to save someone, and Asaf, astonished and enchanted, finds himself running with her before he has even met her. The fairy tale of the sleeping princess and the rescuing prince echoes through the book, but here the roles are reversed.
