Andreas Ban, the cynical hero of an earlier novel, has survived his attempt at suicide. Very ill, he goes on battling the ghosts of past and present, ruthlessly dissecting society and the people around him, asking no one for favours, digging into his own wounds and laying bare everyone else's hidden secrets. Since history keeps the names of the killers rather than the victims, he sets out to remember the lost. His travels take him from Rijeka to Zagreb, Belgrade and Tirana, to Paris and to castles in Italy, and the dead go with him: chess masters who vanished in the Second World War, the missing people of Latvia, war criminals who went to work for the CIA and died in their beds, and his own family, the dead and the dying. With few pieces left, he plays a last game of chess against Death.
