Zagreb, at the turn from the nationalist, militarised 1990s to the 2000s. Goran Kanevski, a sensitive but reserved intellectual of about thirty who has never quite found his way, has a well-paid, dull job at a small private winery, still lives with his parents and spends his nights at parties and bars with drifting friends from the neighbourhood. His 'erotic friendship' with Tamara, meant as sex without obligations, has long turned into possessiveness and mutual dependence. He dreams of writing a novel about Constantine, a Byzantine alchemist at the fall of Constantinople, and pieces of it run through the book. At its centre are his sessions with a psychoanalyst, after which he slowly leaves his inert life behind and travels to Macedonia, the land of his ancestors, where an unusual love story awaits him.
