The Brotherhood are young delinquents in Rotorua who fill their days with selling dope, heavy drinking, fast driving and brawling. At the centre is Gator, with his contempt for capitalism and his own theory of the beast inside every person. When one of the group is beaten up by members of a Roto-Vegas gang, they set off on a revenge road trip that turns into a brutal rite of passage, while a complicated drug deal goes wrong around them. The journey leads into a darker side of New Zealand. The telling switches between a narrator's voice and an outside view, and some passages are laid out like a script.
