Eleni is born in a small village near Paphos in the 1940s. Illness and poverty bring her to Nicosia, where she lives in a poor little courtyard with her married sister. Against the pressure around her she insists on marrying Arif, a Turkish Cypriot, and becomes Hatice, learning Turkish until it is her first language. Told mostly in the second person and moving between Greek and the Cypriot dialect, the novel follows her through the island's history, from the 20th of July 1974, the day of the Turkish landing announced by a coded holiday message, to the queues of 2003 at the reopened crossing points.
