Eswaryadala, king of Patali Nagantun, is restless and wants a fresh young girl every night. His officer Sang Setia sends soldiers out to hunt for them behind the back of the chief minister, Bandeswarya, until no girls are left and even the daughters of officials and soldiers have been taken. To end the practice, Bandeswarya offers his only daughter, Ni Diah Tantri, with her consent, for she has secretly admired the handsome king. Night after night she tells him fables nested one inside another: of the lion Candapinggala, the dog Sambada and the bull Nandaka, of a tiger fooled by a goat chewing a tree with blood-red sap, of greed, ingratitude and deceit and the karma they bring. All the while she wonders where the taken girls have gone.
