Niki is based on the stories the author's mother told about her father, and on that father's own accounts of his long and troubled relationship with the Left. Niki is the daughter of Vasilis Nefeloudis, the most prominent official of the Greek Communist Party between the wars, who was later expelled from the party but never lost his faith. The novel follows her from infancy to the hard last years of her life, and its central conflict is between political faith and family.
