In a veranda full of draughts, on the edge of a village without electricity, life is organized between Matthias and an injured man who was entrusted to him just before winter. The deal is this: the old man will see the younger one through his recovery in exchange for firewood, supplies and, above all, a seat in the convoy that will leave for the city in the spring. The snow piles up and every day brings its challenges. Beside the wood stove the two men laboriously build a bond through conversation and the visits of Joseph, Jonas, Jean, Jude, José and the beautiful Maria, while village rumours seep in and the tension mounts.
