Vinod, whom his family calls Binni, is a bright, all-round student, but from childhood he lives with a crisis of identity: he is born transgender. A band of eunuchs takes him away from his family, which keeps his existence hidden from the world, and he must live with their Sardar in a thikana, a place he is forced to inhabit. In letters, he tells of a life of deprivation, humiliation and poverty, of the pain of separation from his mother, and of the violent death of Punam that he witnesses. Set in a mixed Gujarati, Marathi and Hindi milieu, the novel follows his perseverance and resistance against a society's prejudice.
