Centuries ago a band of Evenki came from around Lake Baikal to the Chinese side of the Argun, the river that marks the border with Russia, and they have lived with their reindeer ever since, trusting their shamans and moving camp to follow the herds. Cold, predators and disease thin their numbers, and later come the Japanese occupation, the Cultural Revolution and the steady advance of modern life. The story is told in her own voice by an old woman of nearly ninety, the last chieftain's wife, in parts that run from morning through noon to dusk.
