Jini has been shunted between schools in Tokyo, Hawaii and Oregon. Staying with a host family, she meets Stephanie and starts telling her story. Born to a Korean family in Japan, she attended Japanese primary school, then switched to a Korean school, where she alone could not speak the language and where pictures of the Kims hung over every room. At the end of the 1998 summer break, North Korea launched a Taepodong missile, and the next day, walking about town in her chima jeogori uniform, Jini found herself hemmed in by men claiming to be police.
