When the narrator's father died she inherited no boxes of papers or letters. His ashes were thrown into the water, his belongings given away or hastily destroyed. He had pale eyes and a beard, the virile, careless look of the 1970s; he could not sit down to eat without his pocket knife and bread, and refused to defer to those who thought themselves his betters. Funny, quick-tempered, sensitive, a smoker and a drinker, he left little behind and seemed to have begun disappearing while still alive. From that absence, and from the faint hollow his head left in the sheet, she builds the fictions with which the living carry on.
