Beneath a roaring motorway bridge, on the site of a settlement the authorities have bulldozed, the only ones left are two young children, Alka and Kappen, sheltering in an old caravan. Sometimes Ina, a young woman from town, turns up with things to eat and small gifts; otherwise the pair drift between daily tasks and make-believe, troubled by fragments of a dark past. Alka dreams of being a builder and gathers scraps from the riverbank to recreate the vanished camp for Kappen. In their games the caravan takes off into the air, and an old atlas guides them over mountains and oceans. Across the water the town is always visible, both menace and a sign of the human community they have lost.
