Esclarmonde, daughter of the lord of Murmures, refuses her groom at the altar in 1187, before a shocked crowd, to keep a promise to God. Defying her father, she is sealed into a cell by the chapel with one grated window, and there, instead of solitude, she finds herself where this world and the next meet.
