Den älskvärde

Someone asks the narrator a simple question about her father, and it shakes her badly. The quiet man she adored died two decades ago, and she finds she hardly knew him. So she begins to piece him together from the things he owned and from the period that formed him. All the while her mother, still living, is sinking into confusion, her words breaking apart and her past turning into dream. Scenes from those visits, told plainly and tenderly, alternate with the effort to bring the father into focus, revealing the stifling closeness of a respectable family.
