Elizabeth Taylor is a general surgeon in Wellington's public health system, brilliant, demanding and one of few women at her level in a culture run by men. Operating in an emergency on Lisa, a young woman who is gravely ill, with her trainee Richard assisting, she finds widespread infection, and the patient dies soon afterwards. At the same time the government plans to publish each surgeon's mortality figures, a scheme Elizabeth has attacked in print. After she takes responsibility at a tense meeting she is put on restricted duties, and she pours her anger into renovating her house while relationships around her, including a secret one with a nurse, Robin, begin to break. The novel weighs human error against the demand for simple answers.
