The black slave Ater, the legionary Leontid and the merchant Heliodor come to Poetovio, today's Ptuj, for different reasons. Between 163 and 195 Rome goes through several emperors and fights barbarians breaking through the frontier, while the colony on the Drava flourishes as a meeting place of peoples and religions, among them the worshippers of Mithras and the Sun. Ater is sold to work in a quarry in the Pohorje hills; Leontid, after many bloody battles, earns his pension and can at last marry and settle down; Heliodor, a Christian Greek from Nicomedia, flees with his daughter and son from the plague in Hatra that killed his wife and finds many buyers for his goods in Poetovio. Their lives intertwine as they help one another through their trials, in a story of the coming of Christianity to Ptuj.
