When Chas Featherby, an old seaman in Hull, dies, his son in Iceland, Örn Featherby, comes into an unexpected inheritance: almost two hundred pairs of shoes. At about the same time Örn and his friend Jón, who studied film directing in Prague but works as a librarian in Hafnarfjörður, are promised money by an old schoolmate, the pharmacist Alfreð Leó, to make a feature film. To collect the inheritance the two travel together to England by sea, with the draft of a screenplay in their luggage. What follows is recorded by Jón's former sister-in-law, Jenny Alexson.
