Stoyu and Taso are born at the turn of the twentieth century in Zanovets, a small village in Macedonia. Their characters, values and aims are opposite, yet their childhood friendship keeps them competing all their lives as fate brings them together and sets them against each other. The novel covers a single day, marked by short interludes between the chapters, but it holds two lives and half a century of Balkan history, from the struggle over Macedonia through local wars and the First World War to 1953. Stoyu, a plain carpenter with a gift for carving, is refused almost everything: happiness, success and, under the new communist rulers, even his carving. Taso rises with the new power and does unforgivable things. Between them there is also love, shared and fulfilled, and a hard-won friendship between men.
