During the First Balkan War, as Turkish troops advance and ravage the Bulgarian villages of Aegean Thrace, a Bulgarian family flees with two sons, a daughter and a newborn granddaughter. To save his simple-minded brother, a six-year-old boy shoots a Turkish soldier with the man's own rifle, and to keep the family from being found, the grandfather smothers the baby. After many hardships they reach the small town of Vasiliko, today's Tsarevo. Meanwhile Ivan, the baby's father, has deserted the Turkish army rather than fire on Bulgarians and makes his way towards the Aegean, without news of his family, until he finds his wife Zlatina again and must face what can no longer be mended.
