In an unnamed future, democracy has collapsed, the internet is outlawed and the regime has concluded that liberty, and the dreams that reading inspires, cost too many lives. Everyone wears identical clothing, vivid colours are banned, and the only permitted books deal in success, wealth and contentment without ever going deeper. Each morning the censor reports to a drab office block beside a lawn where white rabbits graze, and he combs through every novel for traces of the imagination. At home, his small girl defies the rules: she talks to friends no one else can see, dresses like a fairy, and her head is full of tales he cannot explain, since he has never told her any.
