After 'twenty-three time units' in a psychiatric hospital, the painter Filip Latinović, whose name and much else are borrowed from Krleža's classic novel, comes home and tries to find his bearings in a Croatia of wild capitalism and the new state. In the sanatorium he learned to keep his memories as if behind glass. Outside, he takes masochistic pleasure in sessions with Ksenija, a lover with several men who is in fact a professional dominatrix, and signs a contract with her under a slave's name, Gregor. His other home is his family, where a newly discovered biological father turns out to be the lover of both his mother and his sister. The people he meets, with names as in Krleža, only deepen his confusion, and masochism appears less as a taste for pain than as a way of answering society's rigid laws with irony.
