Among the many miracles of the medieval imagination, perhaps the strangest befalls the good Bishop Yves and his wine. Sentenced by him to drowning, old Aicelina curses his wine, and the best wine in the Christian world now tastes of goat. Only a young goat's cheese, made from the milk of one special white nanny goat, can cure it, and there will be no cheese until the noble animal comes into heat. To give the bishop back the light of his life, the right billy goat must be found, and an expedition of goat suitors goes looking for him where Latin culture meets the Slavic world of the old believers. Set when the first of seven popes moved the Holy See to Avignon, the novel asks whether the centre of the universe shifted because of politics, or because of the best wine in Christendom.
