Soon after the First World War, Vito, a short, plump, curly-haired man from the Mediterranean with charm and an adventurous spirit, fulfils his life's wish by building a hotel in the middle of the savannah in an imaginary African land held up by the wind. The hotel is no more than a hut of clay, and its only regular guests are the Haruše, local herders who love betting, drinking and fighting. Vito falls for the housekeeper Alice. The Irish mission teacher Brandon O'Donell, full of colonial prejudice, opposes the hotel's way of life, while Hans Putkamoja, a former German soldier and storyteller, links the characters to a background of wartime horror and African magic.
