Chand Ali works as a blacksmith for a Sikh family in Lahore. When India and Pakistan are divided, he tries to take the sisters Mohinder Kaur and Tanveer Kaur to the refugee border, but the vehicle they board goes to Delhi. On the sisters' advice he becomes Chandar, and they leave their gold jewellery with him. Chased by police at a railway station, he falls in with a holy man known as Jolige Baba, Badruddin, son of Roshan Ali of the village of Muttuppadi, and hopes to ask Gandhi for help in going back to Lahore, only to arrive as Gandhi is shot. He follows Badruddin south to Muttuppadi, where he settles, still keeping the sisters' jewellery for decades.
