In 2998 a comet smashes into an asteroid and the wreckage strikes Ganymede, killing all its human settlers; in the cold their bodies never decay. Only robots remain, missing their makers. Jimmy Chan, dug out of the ice after the disaster, meets Dr Julius, a robot singer and face-reader, in a café, and cannot quite accept that machines read each other's faces. Wandering the ruins, Jimmy comes across a human family frozen where they died and a woman who grows flowers fed by the dead, and is left feeling lonely.
