Grief has shaped Taukiri's whole life. His father died in gang violence, his mother vanished to escape it, and he has now left his younger brother Ārama, just eight, in rural Kaikōura with their Aunty Kat and hair-trigger Uncle Stu, while he gets by alone in the city, carrying his late father's guitar and a weight of shame. Ārama turns out to have more courage than anyone expects, along with a best friend and that friend's dog, and the three may be able to push back the sorrow. In another strand, Jade, Aroha and Toko are drawn into the brutal loyalties of gang life. Violence runs through the novel, but so do humour, forgiveness and fierce love.
