His father, who sold fruit from a truck, wanted nothing more than a secure post in the lowest grade of the civil service, failed the exam again and again, and was killed driving recklessly. A friend who lived freely behind the wheel of a Porsche also died on the road. Still he clings to his love for a 1989 model, the car he hopes will carry him out of a life he cannot bear and into another world.
