A handyman who has tiled seven bathrooms, Jónas Ebeneser Snæland is forty-nine and divorced, and with his roles as husband and father gone he sees no point in going on. The first part shows the life in Reykjavík that brings him to the decision to die. In the second, he takes a one-way trip to an unnamed country newly emerged from war, taking his drill with him. The novel explores masculinity, usefulness and care for others.
