Finland, 1918. The farmhands have fled the village manor and its owner, Martin, an old man worn out by a pointless life, is alone. Emma, a farmer's daughter whom the village looks down on, moves in and takes charge of the neglected estate, just as Aarne, a Red leader marching his men on Helsinki, turns up there with a score to settle. Moving back and forth in time and into the minds of all three, each humbled in a different way, the story shows people forced to be Red or White against their will. Aarne is later held in a prison camp, gets away, and comes back to the manor seeking redress for an old wrong.
