'Who are you?' Felix, shell-shocked by a faraway war, asks young Tymofii from time to time; Felix is his enemy and friend, his tormentor and mentor. 'Who am I?' asks the almost adult, autobiographical Tymofii near the end of the novel. The road from the first question to the second is that of any novel of education; Tymofii's is shaped by the repellent experience of a war that was never his, which proves to be moral and physical training for a war of his own, though that later war never appears in the book. Along the way come all the childhood and teenage initiations through which one forces a path to an adult life quite unlike the one expected.
